Southern California Edison (SCE) will purchase power for 6000 homes from a privately-financed 12,000 kilowatt solar-thermal facility located on utility property near Daggett and built by Acurex and Phillips petroleum Co. Solar One, a federal heliostat project also near Daggett, is already sending power during its test phase to 1500 homes. After the testing period, the utility expects the private sector to finance any future facilities. SCE can also draw power from a one-megawatt solar farm using photovoltaic technology that ARCO Solar, Inc. is planning. An incentive program designed by Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG and E) to encourage renewable energy development and cogeneration has led to contracts for 1.1 million kilowatts from geothermal, pumped storage, hydroelectric, cogeneration, agricultural wastes, and wind facilities. 5 figures.
