Several innovations to drilling technology have resulted in recent years from the DSDP, which has used the Glomar Challenger drillship to drill and recover cores from deep ocean areas around the world. Some of these developments include a hydraulic piston corer, improvements in drillstring design and a bit releasing mechanism. Other innovations have been more subtle, resulting from years of experience at operating a vessel to drill at extreme ocean depths. This report highlights the operational mode of the DSDP project for its contribution to ocean drilling technology. 20 refs.
