A new laboratory atomic sulfur beam source has been developed which has allowed the measurement of relative oscillator strengths for three prominent dipole-allowed SI transitions: 3p{sup 4} {sup 3}P {yields} 4s {sup 3}S{sup 0} (1814 {angstrom}), 3p{sup 4} {sup 3}P {yields} 4s{prime} {sup 3}D{sup 0} (1479 {angstrom}), and 3p{sup 4} {sup 3}P {yields} 3d {sup 3}D{sup 0} (1429 {angstrom}). The method of forward electron scattering was used. The oscillator strength ratios are found to be: f{sub 1479}/f{sub 1814} = 1.12 {plus minus} 0.06 and f{sub 1429}/f{sub 1814} = 1.69 {plus minus} 0.08. If f{sub 1814} is normalized to the National Bureau of Standards reference value of 0.12, then: f{sub 1479} = 0.134, f{sub 1429} = 0.202 (both {plus minus} 30%). These results are significant for the understanding of SI emissions observed from Io and the Io torus as well as from certain comets.
