ISOTOPE SHIFT IN THE FIRST SPECTRUM OF SILICON (Si I)

Journal Article · · Journal of the Optical Society of America (U.S.)
Isotope shifts of Si/sup 30/ relative to Si/sup 28/ were observed in eleven ultraviolet lines of the neutral silicon spectrum. The spectra of two highly enriched samples of elemental silicon were excited separately in two hollow-cathode discharge tubes cooled in liquid nitrogen. An externally mounted Fabry-Perot interferometer, used in connection with a medium Hilger, quartz-prism spectrograph, provided the high resolution necessary for these observations. The magnitudes of the observed shifts vary from DELTA v approximates 0.011 plus or minus 0.001 cm/sup -1/ for the (3p/sup 2/ P/sup 3/--4s/sup 3/3P/sup 0/) transition to DELTA v approximates 0.115 plus or minus 0.002 cm/sup -1/ for the (3p/ P3-3a /sup 3/D/sup 0/) transition.
