Biological treatment of nitrate wastewater using fluidized-bed bioreactors
- Oak Ridge National Lab., TN
Fluidized-bed bioreactors were tested as processes for denitrifying process wastewaters at flows of 23 m/sup 3//d (0.2-m-diam column) and 166 m/sup 3//d (0.5-mm-diam column). A mixed denitrifying culture obtained from garden soil was used as an inoculum for the bioreactors; films of denitrifying bacteria were allowed to form on 0.25 to 0.50-mm-diam anthracite coal particles that were fluidized in the bioreactor. As average nitrate concentrations were increased from ca. 1000 to 2500 g/m/sup 3/, denitrification rates increased from 25 to 48 kg nitrate-nitrogen/d m/sup 3/ for 11-min hydraulic retention times. These rates appeared to be independent of column diameter. Two 0.2-m-diam bioreactors operated in series on influent nitrate concentrations of 2000 g/m/sup 3/ could produce nitrate effluent concentrations less than or equal to 44 g/m/sup 3/.
