At a time when industry economics are forcing even the most healthy operators to scale down development projects, Placid Oil Co. is proceeding with a landmark subsea development in deep waters off Louisiana. The three-tract field involves the deepest subsea production system and the largest production riser in the world. It is the fourth deepwater project initiated in Green Canyon since early last year. Shell Offshore will install the world's largest conventional steel platform on Green Canyon Block 65 in 1,350 ft waters. The operator will also install a 21-slot steel platform in 750-ft waters on its Green Canyon Block 19 Boxer prospect. Next door on Green Canyon Block 18, Mobil Oil Producing Southwest Inc. is placing a steel platform in 750-ft waters. But among these projects, most industry watchdogs are keeping a sharp eye on Placid's subsea development - all equipment is rated to 3,500 ft. Such methods will dominate production as operators chase hydrocarbons into increasingly deeper waters - 2,500 ft and beyond.
