The present long lead-time and increasingly longer lead-time in the future for supplying additional capacity of non-fuel minerals require detailed projections of the level of demand for these minerals. The input-output framework is a particularly suitable tool for projecting alternative levels of demand for non-fuel minerals on the basis of alternative sets of assumptions, such as population growth, changing patterns of personal consumption, technological change, increasing rates of economic development in less-developed countries, varying rates of recycling, and limitations on American dependence on imported minerals. Based on the recently released Department of Commerce Input-Output Table of the US Economy, an input-output model incorporating the flows of and the inputs into twenty-six non-fuel mineral sectors is being developed to project the production and consumption of these minerals to the year 2000. In addition to embodying the special characteristics of the minerals industries such as capital requirements, recycling, by-products (of pollution and other minerals), and energy requirements into the model, the study will be linked with the recently completed United Nations World Input-Output Model. 5 references, 6 tables.
