The use of dispersed air flotation to attack oil pollution was demonstrated at Chevron U.S.A. Inc.'s asphalt plant at Cincinnati, Ohio, where some oil persisted despite the use of an API oil-water separator. The oil remnant is handled with a polyelectrolyte, which aids coagulation and breaks up emulsions. Flotation is then done with a unit developed by Joy Manufacturing Co. (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Clean water from the flotation unit is retained for a minimum of eight hours before discharge to the Ohio River. The unit can handle up to 150 gpm.
