Polyelectrolyte-aided induced air flotation was carried out with two cationic polyelectrolytes from Petrolite Corp., Tretolite Division and a crude oil-in-water emulsion as test fluid in a bench model induced air flotation cell at 25/sup 0/C. Although the kinetics generally remained first order in the presence of added polyelectrolytes, the observed first-order rate constant increased rapidly as the polyelectrolyte concentration was raised from zero to some intermediate value, then leveled off, or in cases of overtreatment, decreased with a further increase in polyelectrolyte concentration. Translated to half-lives, the effect of added polyelectrolyte is, in this case, to reduce time required to achieve a 50Vertical Bar3< reduction in the initial oil level from more than 17 to less than 0.5 min. Polyelectrolyte performance improves as the ionic strength of the aqueous medium increases. A distinct inverse relationship exists between polyelectrolyte performance and a polymer-solvent interaction energies. Thus, the performance of a flotation aid is controlled in part by its affinity for the oil/water interface.
