At the recent Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization international conference on tanker safety, regulations regarding pollution were issued. The U.S. Coast Guard is ordering that new and existing oil tankers be equipped with new, pollution-preventing safety features, e.g., segregated ballast tanks, improved drainage systems, improved electronics to detect undersea hazards, and gas alert systems. Other countries at the conference also agreed to increase the number of inspections and to rigorously enforce the regulations.
