Differential cross sections have been measured for quasielastic charge exchange of ..pi../sup -/ mesons in carbon nuclei ..pi../sup -/C..-->..M/sup 0/C* at momentum 39.1 GeVc, where M/sup 0/ = ..pi../sup 0/, eta, eta'(958), ..omega..(783), and f/sub 2/(1270) mesons at momentum transfers -t achieving values of 3.0, 2.0, 1.0, 2.4, and 2.0 (GeVc)/sup 2/, respectively. For each reaction the dependence of the effective charge of the carbon nucleus Z/sub eff/(t) on momentum transfer has been obtained. The experimental results favor the hypothesis of scattering of a colored cloud by the nucleons of the nucleus
