Analysis of the reproducible generation of ultrashort pulses in an YAG:Nd/sup 3 +/ laser

In YAG:Nd/sup 3 +/ lasers, passive mode locking is obtained in both continuous and pulsed operation in a rather reliable fashion. Therefore there arises the problem of how the dynamic mechanisms are related to the fluctuation mechanisms in the development of ultrashort pulses in such lasers. The authors show that the saturation density of the filter is one of the important parameters accounting for the conditions of generation in such a laser. When the saturation density is increased, multipeak passive mode locking is replaced by the generation of single ultrashort pulses on an axial resonator period and thereafter by free generation; i.e., the high-frequency self-modulation disappears. The results point to ways of producing YAG:Nd/sup 3 +/ lasers operating in stable passive mode locking when the parameters of the resonator and the passive shutters are varied within wide limits.
