Markets recover from outage

Global methanol markets are settling down after a wild ride the past two weeks. The original cause was a compressor problem that knocked out the new 150-million gal/year BP-Sterling joint venture methanol plant at Texas City. The plant is not a big merchant producer, but with demand strong and other minor outages keeping markets jittery, BP-Sterling`s declaration of force majeure caused a chain reaction of allocations by other sellers and sent spot prices through the roof.
