Hoechst basic chemicals says it will not have its methanol plant at Clear Lake, TX back onstream before the new year; however, the company adds it has been able to meet all of its obligations to customers. The unit, a joint venture with Valero, was damaged by an explosion on December 3. US Gulf Coast methanol spot prices have risen to 50 cts/gal fob in the wake of the outage, which came at the end of a bad year for methanol producers in general and Hoechst in particular. December posting prices rose 3 cts/gal, to 54 cts-57 cts/gal fob.
