Economic impact of air pollutants on plants

Book ·
OSTI ID:5254712
An attempt is made by the Coordinating Research Council in cooperation with Stanford Research Institute to develop gross estimates of economic losses resulting from the effects of air pollutants on plants, with emphasis on those effects resulting from specific automotive emissions. The study is limited to the effects of ozone, PAN, ethylene, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and fluorides, since these compounds account for at least 90% of the damage to plants from air pollutants. The estimates of loss are confined to losses caused by the direct effects of pollutants on yield, quality, and marketability of commercial crops and ornamental plant losses to commercial vendors. The relative sensitivities of about 60 crop plants to a number of the more common air contaminants are tabulated. Efforts are made to ascertain the counties in the US where the emissions of interest would result in potential damage to plants. This report describes the results of the first 6 month's effort.
