Three ways of using gas turbine (GT) plants in district heating systems are discussed: gas turbine-type heat and power stations (GT heat and power stations) which ensure obtaining flexible capacity with recovery of heat from flue gases; combined district heating generating units; and steam turbine-gas turbine district heating generating units. The study concludes that the use of gas turbine units with heat recovery as flexible plants in district heating systems ensures a considerable increase in effectiveness of production of electrical power. To secure maximum effectiveness of using GT plants they should be used only with heat recovery in the various systems. The most advisable areas of using flexible GT plants in a district heating system are: combined district heating generating units with arrangement of the plant to cover the peak load part of the electric load curve; gas turbine type heat and power stations intended to supply heat to small towns and town type settlements with operation of the GT plant as a rule to cover semipeak loads. In providing liquid or gaseous fuel for heat sources, as well as in introducing gasification of solid fuels we must count on steam turbine-gas turbine plants.
