America's energy choices. [Summary of findings of resources for the future study]

Studies of the long-term outlook for energy supply and demand indicate that, given the appropriate policies, new domestic energy technologies are only double the present price of conventional fuels and will eventually be lower. They also suggest that the rate of growth of energy consumption will decline in relation to national output if consumption is not constrained in productive areas below cost-effective levels. The studies conclude that it is possible to reach a public consensus supporting the combined long-range goals of economic growth, efficient end-use, and social and environmental well-being. The necessary decisions must be made soon, however, to counteract the feeling that nothing can be done. (DCK)
