Esophageal duplication cysts account for a very small percentage (0.5%-2.5% of all tumor or tumorlike lesions of the esophagus. Although these lesions are benign, their symptoms and appearance can suggest malignancy, particularly in the adult. Consequently, patients with esophageal duplication cysts often come to mediastinoscopy and/or surgery to exclude malignancy for a definitive diagnosis and for treatment of symptoms. The case demonstrates the combined use of computed tomography (CT) and transesophageal needle aspiration in the diagnosis and management of an esophageal duplication cyst.
