Coulomb scattering as the limit of scattering off smoothly screened Coulomb potentials

We examine the amplitude f /sup rho/(costheta) for scattering off a screened Coulomb potential V/sup tsrho/(r) =V/sup C/(r)..cap alpha../sup tsrho/(r), where V/sup C/(r) is the Coulomb potential ..gamma../r. We prove that, for a wide class of smooth screening functions ..cap alpha../sup tsrho/(r), the screened amplitude f/sup tsrho/(costheta) approaches the pure Coulomb amplitude f/sup tsC/(costheta), times a phase factor, as the screening radius rho..-->..infinity. This limit is pointwise and uniform in angle and energy (excluding arbitrarily small neighborhoods of theta=0 and E=0), and therefore implies that the corresponding cross sections become equal as rho..-->..infinity.
