Book ·
OSTI ID:5235669

This book reviews the history of the world uranium industry and analyzes the present economic and political forces shaping export policies, pricing, inventories, investment, and security measures. The technical structure of the nuclear fuel-supply system is examined and the implications of this structure for uranium and nuclear fuel supply and demand are explored. Topics considered include fuel-cycle economics, the trends in exploration and discovery, reactor requirements for uranium, the suppliers (Australia, Canada, the African producers), international trade, supply to consumer nations, and the US in international markets. The roles played by nuclear fuels in nuclear power economics, energy trade and security, and in the prevention of nuclear weapons proliferation are examined. Conclusions are presented with regard to reserves and supply potential, assessing costs, market rigidities and sovereign constraints, contracting and equity constraints, sovereign intervention, structural adjustment, and market evolution.
