Possibility of self-consistent long-range order in nuclear matter

Generalized Hartree-Fock Overhauser orbitals, corresponding to a (zero pressure) periodic structure or ..cap alpha.. particles, are shown to have lower energy than homogeneous nuclear matter with a Skyrme interaction, at subnuclear densities.
