Gas flow in a centrifuge
The mathematical relationship between Onsager's pancake equation and the Ekman boundary layer equations is derived by methods of perturbation theory. The so-called internal flow region is shown to be simply the first term in an asymptotic series for the outer expansion. The complementary inner expansion is shown to be the Ekman layer. Some of the more subtle approximations and assumptions on boundary conditions are given attention.
