The Savannah River Site (SRS) occupies approximately 300 square miles along the Savannah River, principally in Aiken and Barnwell counties in South Carolina. The environmental surveillance activities at and the vicinity of the Savannah River Site comprise one of the most comprehensive and extensive monitoring programs in the United States. The Site's environmental surveillance program extends beyond its boundary to cover a 30,000 square-mile area. Radiological monitoring accounts for more than half of the data generated from the Site's extensive monitoring program. In 1988, 113,500 radiological analyses were conducted on 25,000 samples. In 1988, a comprehensive Quality Assurance Improvement Program was established for the radiological environmental monitoring programs at the Savannah River Site. The primary objective of quality assurance (QA) is to ensure that data generated by the Site's environmental monitoring program are accurate, precise, and defensible.
