Pathways of acid formation in the liquid-phase oxidation of p-xylene catalyzed by cobalt salts

The authors show that in the liquid-phase oxidation of p-xylene, catalyzed by cobalt salts, acids are formed by two pathways: through the chain oxidation of aldehyde by molecular oxygen with the formation of a peracid, followed by oxidation of the aldehyde to an acid by the peracid; and through heterolytic oxidation of aldehyde to acid by a primary hydroperoxide.
