The recombination reaction O + SO + M ..-->.. SO/sub 2/ + M has been studied at room temperature by laser flash photolysis in a variety of 13 bath gases M. By variation of the pressure between 0.2 and 200 bar, major parts of the falloff curves were observed. A liming high-pressure rate coefficient of k/sub rec,infinity//(Ar) = 5.3 x 10/sup -11/ cm/sup 3/ molecule/sup -1/ s/sup -1/ and limiting low-pressure rate coefficients of k/sub rec,0/(Ar) = 5.1 x 10/sup -31/ cm/sup 6/ molecule/sup -2/s/sup -1/ and k/sub rec,0//(N/sub 2/) = 7.7 x 10/sup -31/ cm/sup 6/ molecule/sup -2/s/sup -1/ were obtained. A theoretical analysis of these data and SO/sub 2/ dissociation results suggests that excited electronic states of SO/sub 2/ contribute with a factor of 5-20 to the low- and high-pressure ranges of the reaction. Average energies transferred per collision <..delta..E> are derived from the low-pressure rate coefficients. For M = Ar, <..delta..E> probably does not markedly depend on the temperature between 300 and 5000 k. The indirectly derived <..delta..E> values from this work correspond to recently directly measured values after laser excitation. 57 references, 3 figures, 5 tables.
