Observation of an interference effect in reactions induced by /sup 6/Li nuclei

Functions of the ..cap alpha..d angular correlation in the /sup 12/C(/sup 6/Li,d)/sup 16/O*(..cap alpha..)/sup 12/C process have been measured in the entire angle range (from 0 to 180/sup 0/ to the direction of motion of the /sup 16/O nucleus). It was found that while the correlation function for the 20.9-MeV (7/sup -/) level of the /sup 16/O nucleus in the range 20--180/sup 0/ is well described by a 7th-order Legendre polynomial squared, the first maximum of the distribution (from 0 to 20/sup 0/) is strongly suppressed (at least by 70%). The mechanism of the observed destructive interference is discussed.
