Elastic scattering of 1-GeV protons by helium isotopes

Differential cross sections for elastic scattering of 1-GeV protons have been measured for the nuclei /sup 3/He and /sup 4/He. The differential cross sections are analyzed in the framework of the Glauber-Sitenko theory. The experimentally observed filling of the diffraction minima of the cross sections is explained by the different dependence of the real and imaginary parts of the central proton-nucleon amplitude on momentum transfer. The difference in the rms radii of the neutron and proton distributions obtained for /sup 3/He and /sup 4/He is respectively -0.3 +- 0.2 and -0.11 +- 0.07 F.
