Far-infrared spectrum of irradiated polyethylene

The infrared spectra of two kinds of ..gamma..-irradiated polyethylene, a high-density and a low-density material was determined. Spectral evidence seems to indicate that the crystalline parts of the material are not changed by the irradiation process. The crosslinking seems to take place in the amorphous part of the material. Due to the difference in the thermal history of the two kinds of polypropylenes, no meaningful difference in the spectra could be discerned.
