A study has been made of the methanol conversion on bifunctional catalysts prepared by deposition of 12-series heteropoly compounds (HPCs) A/sub x/EMo/sub 12/O/sub 40/ (where A = H/sup +/, Na/sup +/, Cu/sup 2 +/, or Co/sup 2 +/; E = Si/sup 4 +/, P/sup 5 +/) on the supports SiO/sub 2/, TiO/sub 2/, and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/. It has been established that a lowering of the concentration of protonic centers in the catalysts, whether by increasing the degree of replacement of H/sup +/ in heteropolyacids by metal cations, by depositing the HPC on basic supports, by replacing the P/sup 5 +/ central atom by Si/sup 4 +/, or by increasing the degree of HPC dehydration, leads to an increase in the catalyst selectivity with respect to formaldehyde production, through a lowering of the rates of acid-type reactions
