This introduction to the subject of microdosimetry is based on presentations made by the author as part of the Professional Enrichment Programs at the 1989 and 19990 Annual Meetings of the health Physics Society. Microdosimetry owes its origin and much of its subsequent development to H.H. Rossi and his collaborators. In this paper the basic concepts of conventional radiation dosimetry are critiqued and contrasted with those of microdosimetry. Applications of microdosimetry in the fields of radiation biology and radiation protection are described. Some examples of current research are given, with emphasis from the author's background in track-structure calculations. Finally, an assessment is offered of microdosimetry and its future role in radiation protection and research.
