An ambitious development program is underway to make Sudan, Africa's largest and one of the world's least developed nations, a major food, oil, and mineral producer. Financial aid is coming from the industrialized and the Arab oil countries and from private investors, such as Chevron Oil Company. Chevron's exploration program began in 1975, followed by exploratory drilling in 1977. Twelve wells have been drilled and are producing the first oil to flow from Sudan's large sedimentary basin. No major crude oil discovery has been made yet, but the geologic subsurface is being extensively mapped. The development program will focus on rural areas where 85 percent of the population lives and 95 percent of export earning are grown. (DCK)
