Oil spills: where we are and where we're going

This presentation reviews all of the aspects of oil spills, including: (1) the current hazards; (2) the technological programs being promulgated on handling emergency spills; (3) the overall research program of the API; and (4) recommended practices for cleanup, spill amelioration, containment, and recovery. The study contains a report on the Battelle work, a guideline for casualties at sea, a discussion of harbor spills, methods of handling oil that comes ashore on the beaches, and a description of a biologist's method for handling oil-soaked birds. Photographs are included which show: a method for fencing in spills; a skimmer boat developed by the American Oil Co., and the operation of a floating boom to corral oil from a well blowout. A table presents data to compare costs and results obtained for various spill-control systems. This is a complete summary of oil spills, where we stand at this time, and where we are going in combating this mode of pollution.
