Measurement of the correlation between alignment and electron momentum in /sup 12/B. -->. /sup 12/C(g. s. ) decay by a novel technique: Another search for second-class currents

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
Gradient couplings (weak magnetism, induced-second-class tensor) and recoil terms manifest themselves specifically through a parameter ..cap alpha../sub -/ in the angular distribution of 1/sup +/ ..-->.. 0/sup +/ ..beta../sup -/ decays of oriented nuclei, i.e., of /sup 12/B to /sup 12/C(g.s.). To decide between two contradictory results, we have redetermined ..cap alpha../sub -/ by a direct measurement of the alignment correlation term, A..cap alpha../sub -/EP/sub 2/(theta), with a novel technique. We find ..cap alpha../sub -/ = + 0.24 +- 0.44 GeV/sup -1/, thereby confirming the Louvain result, and ruling out a ''large'' second-class current.
