Measurement of the correlation between nuclear alignment and electron direction in /sup 12/B decay as a direct search for the second-class axial-vector current

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
The alignment correlation term A..cap alpha../sub -/EP/sub 2/(costheta) has been measured in the ..beta../sup -/ decay /sup 12/B ..-->.. /sup 12/C(g.s) by a novel technique. The result, ..cap alpha../sub -/(E/sub 0/) = - (0.1 +- 0.2)/GeV, indicates that the conserved vector current weak-magnetism form factor, F/sub M/, is essentially compensated here by the weak electricity (induced tensor) form factor F/sub E/. Using the decomposition of F/sub E/ = F/sub E//sup(1) + F/sub E//sup(2) into first- and second-class parts, as well as a reliable estimate of F/sub E//sup(1), we conclude that F/sub E//sup(2) is small compared to F/sub M/, and compatible with zero.
