Dimuon production in proton-antiproton collisions at /sup -/s = 546 GeV

The CERN anti-pp collider, operating at ..sqrt..s = 546 Gev, has opened up a new energy regime. During the 1983 data taking period 108 nb/sup -1/ of muon triggered data were accumulated by the UA1 detector. From this data sample 26 dimuon events were selected by requiring both muons to have p/sub t/ > 3 GeV/c and the scalar sum of the two p/sub t/'s to be larger than 10 GeV/c. The characteristics of these events are presented, and their possible origins are discussed. Five event with high dimuon mass are interpreted as Z/sup 0/ ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/ or Z/sup 0/ ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/..sigma... Of the lower mass events, nine are likely to arise from semileptonic b or c quark decays, one is probably a J/Psi decay, and five are Drell-Yan or Tau candidates with dimuon masses greater than 10 GeV/c/sup 2/. There are three events with masses between 5 and 7 GeV/c/sup 2/ which are possibly Drill-Yan events, but the rate and their kinematic properties are not in good agreement with that hypothesis. Three events remain, which are classified as isolated like-sign dimuons. One of these events is outstanding by virtue to the high transverse momenta (approx.10 GeV/c) of both of the muons. Monte Carlo calculations indicate that these events are difficult to account for by banti-b production (with or without B/sup 0/-mixing).
