Load reactance element driving device

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5196363
An ignition device is described for an internal combustion engine comprising: a DC power source; an ignition coil having a primary winding and a secondary winding; ignition gaps connected to the secondary winding; a capacitor connected in series with the primary winding; a first switching element comprising a thyristor and forming a closed circuit with the primary winding, the capacitor, and the DC power source; a second switching element comprising a thyristor and forming a closed circuit with the primary winding the capacitor; and a trigger signal generation means for operating in response to a supplied ignition instruction signal and generating a conduction signal to make alternately the first and second switching elements conductive. The conduction signal has a pulse width which is shorter than a half cycle of the resonance period of the reactance load and being supplied to gate terminals of the first and second switching elements, the interval of the alternate conductions of the first and second switching elements being longer than a half cycle of the resonance period of the reactance load.
