High-spin states of [sup 187]Tl populated in the [sup 156]Gd([sup 35]Cl,4[ital n]) reaction have been investigated with [gamma]-ray coincidence techniques. Two decoupled bands feeding the oblate 9/2[sup [minus]] isomeric state have been established. These bands are built on [pi][ital h][sub 9/2] and [pi][ital i][sub 13/2] configurations associated with prolate shapes. The first observation of a low-[ital K] [pi][ital h][sub 9/2] structure in an odd-[ital A] Tl nucleus is used to draw conclusions on the role of this proton orbital in stabilizing the prolate minimum seen in light Hg isotopes.
