Oxidation of N, N-disubstituted p-phenylenediamines in the presence of complex compounds of cobalt (III)

This paper shows through a spectrophotometric method that the limiting step of the conversion of 4-amino-N-ethyl-N-(beta-hydroxyethyl) aniline to benzoquinone in aqueous alkaline solutions is the oxidation of the initial N, N-disubstituted p-phenylenediamine to the corresponding semiquinone. The orders of the oxidation reaction in the presence of the chloropentaminecobalt (III) ion, which is a catalyst of the reaction, were determined. A mechanism of the catalytic process is proposed.
