Resonance enhanced 2-photon photoionization has been applied to detection of gas chromatograph effluents using a small volume proportional counter cell and a low power laser. Detection limits on the order of 10 picograms were obtained for the aromatic hydrocarbons anthracene, phenanthrene, benzanthracene, acenaphthene, naphthalene, and assorted halonaphthalenes. Spectral differentiation between coeluting anthracene and phenanthrene was also demonstrated. The influence of excitation pulse duration was investigated. 10 figures, 2 tables.s
