Pulses of 780 nm light of duration 170 fs and power densities up to 4 x 10{sup 13} W/cm{sup 2} are employed to investigate the photoionization and photodissociation processes in polyatomic molecules. The near-infrared ionization process leads to the production of intact molecular ions for all of the molecules studied to data. Very limited fragmentation is observed for the molecules benzene and naphthalene. More substantial fragmentation is observed for alkanes and for large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, such as phenanthrene and anthracene. Measurements of the ionization order, relative cross section and fragmentation distribution suggest that the ionization process involves both tunneling and barrier suppression ionization.
