The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is clarifying its position and procedures on risk assessment and risk management for toxic air pollutants. It has announced final decisions on benzene regulations, with radionuclides and arsenic to follow, and will decide on whether to regulate an additional 20-25 substances by the end of 1985. The EPA risk assessment/risk management process will not completely decipher the problem of toxic air pollutants because the solution to scientific and technical questions requires more knowledge. The process does provide a framework for rational and responsible decision-making that is responsive to the needs of the public and the nation as a whole. 5 references, 2 tables.
