The widespread use of mode-locked lasers requires a comprehensive study of ways for increasing the efficiency of mode-locked operation. In this letter we report a new approach to mode-locking, based on acoustooptic methods; this approach is best suited to high-gain pulses lasers. This method can be summarized by saying that the feedback in the resonator occurs through the diffracted ray rather than the direct ray. While in conventionala mode-locking systems the resonator has its maximum Q at the nodes of the acoustic power in the modulator, in this new version the maximum Q corresponds to antinodes of the acoustic wave.
