In the region of the (3,3) resonance a study has been made of ..pi../sup 4/He scattering in terms of multiple-scattering theory by the first-order optical-potential method with use of two different formulations of the theory: that of Watson and that of Kerman, McManus, and Thaler. The difference of the results obtained in these two formulations in the impulse approximation is used to select the best version of the impulse approximation. It is shown that the Galilean-invariant impulse approximation is clearly better than the Galilean-noninvariant approximation which is ordinarily used. Also studied is the applicability of the approximation of factorization of the optical potential in the region of the (3,3) resonance and it is shown that use of this approximation can lead to spurious ideas regarding pion-nucleus dynamics.
