SF/sub 6/ epoxy foams developed by Gould
Gould, Inc., under contract to the Electric Power Research Institute, has developed a sulfur hexafluoride (SF/sub 6/) epoxy foam which combines the low cost, low weight, and dielectric constant desired for high voltage insulation. The foam's advantages also include high dielectric strength and the ability to be molded without vacuum casting. Thermal aging tests confirmed that the epoxy foams can retain SF/sub 6/ under all but the worst design case. The foam demonstrates superior electrical properties, although its mechanical properties do not equal those of unfoamed materials. Direct current dielectric strengths were found to be greater than those of alternating current. Dielectric strength is regained by the foam after it has been punctured by a low power source. Applications for the epoxy foam include conical and disc insulators for SF/sub 6/ bus installations, electrical switch gear barriers, gas-to-air bushings, and bushings for circuit breakers and transformers.
