An integrated knowledge-based scheduler for batch manufacturing systems (IKBAS)

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5172712
This research explores the feasibility and advantages of the development of an integrated knowledge-based system (IKBAS) for job-shop scheduling in manufacturing systems. Valid and usable schedules are necessary to enable domestic manufacturing industries to meet the challenge of international competition. The integrated scheduler (INSCH), a precursor to IKBAS, was developed as part of this research and incorporated into the model to perform the selecting and releasing of job orders to be processed by selected dispatching rules in interaction with the decision maker. INSCH can schedule a set of job orders selected from a job pool by various dispatching rules for different job performance criteria using new job release methods. The integrated knowledge-based scheduler (IKBAS) was constructed with a simple knowledge-based-system which consists of some research-based facts and sixteen heuristic rules, to determine the specific dispatching rule. It is concluded that the development of IKBAS for job shop scheduling is feasible and may be usefully implemented in some manufacturing shops.
