Numerical simulation of RF heating in the Alfven frequency range

A numerical simulation has been carried out on the absorption of the RF field on nonaxisymmetric modes (m = 1, 2) in the Alfven frequency range (..cap omega../sub A/(0)<..cap omega..<<..omega../sub H/i) in a nonuniform plasma cylinder with parameters approximating those in existing tokamaks. The absorption is shown to result from conversion of the RF field produced by the helical circuit into a short-wave Alfven mode; the latter heats plasma electrons through Landau damping. Results on the radial profiles of the components of the RF field and of the absorbed power density are reported. The azimuthal propagation direction of the RF field strongly affects the absorption. This effect is attributed to gyrotropy of the plasma.
