Using a model based on the pseudo-vector Born terms, the ..delta.. (1230) in the s and u channels, and the ..omega.. meson, we have obtained pion electroproduction amplitudes from the nucleon in the nonrelativistic limit. This model is an extension of the Blomquist-Laget pion photoproduction model and is in good agreement with experimental data for electron four momentum transfer squared up to approximately 0.3 GeV/sup 2/. The pion electroproduction amplitude we obtain may be used in the investigation of pion electroproduction from nuclei. As an example we have calculated the exclusive pion electroproduction cross sections from the deuteron in the kinematic domain where the pion-nucleon final state interaction is most important. We find that the transverse cross sections dominate and the contributions due to longitudinal terms are small. We have also studied the dependence of the transverse cross section on the four momentum of the virtual photon, i.e., the transverse form factor. We suggest that major experimental deviations from our results could signal additional short-ranged parts of the two body current and/or possible ..delta..-..delta.. components in the deuteron.
