Preferentially binder enriched cemented carbide bodies and method of manufacture

A cemented carbide body is described formed by sintering a substantially homogeneous mixture of constituents comprising at least 70 weight percent tungsten carbide; a metallic binder; a metal carbide selected from the group consisting of the Group IVB and VB transition metal carbides; the metal carbide being present in an amount less than the amount of tungsten carbide. The body has substantially A to B type porosity throughout the body; the metal carbide combined with the tungsten carbide forming a solid solution carbide; a layer of at least partially solid solution carbide depleted material near a peripheral surface of the body.
