Detoxification of the surface effluent of coke and chemicals factories

Journal Article · · Sov. J. Water Chem. Technol.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5163584
Some typical coke and chemical effluents in the USSR were selected for investigation of their composition and of their detoxification. The surface flow contains coal and coke dust, coal tar and oil, phenols, thiocyanates, cyanides, ammonia and ammonium sulphate. The concentrations vary considerably, but only in high rainfall periods. A detoxification scheme, consisting of collection of the surface effluent, its pretreatment and combination with industrial effluents, is described. Biochemically purified and detoxified effluents are suitable for recycling and re-use in heat exchangers and provide about 30-50% of the make-up.
