The invariant cumulative proton and pion cross sections of Be, Al, Cu, and Ta nuclei at the laboratory angle of 119/sup 0/ were measured for large cumulative numbers up to x = 3.8. The properties of the proton and pion production processes are very similar. In particular, there is a universal scale-invariant function that describes the production cross sections of all nuclei. The mean square transverse momentum is found to increase with increasing x.
